Friday, June 10, 2016. One the way to our campground on the west side of the Elkhorns, we stopped in Sumpter, OR to see the historic Sumpter Valley Dredge. The area has a rich mining history so it was cool to see all the old artifacts. The start of an 18 mile training run through the North Fork of the John Day Wilderness. The historic Bigfoot Hilton, emergency shelter. Every good run should have a refreshing water crossing.

The Waldo 100K Ultramarathon is a challenging 100K loop-type course starting at Willamette Pass Ski Area 70 miles east of Eugene, Oregon at elevation 5120, climbing up several mountains including Fuji, The Twins, and Maiden Peak before returning to the ski area. The route is mostly single-track trails with some fairly remote sections and has many incredible views of pristine Waldo Lake.
